Q1. Which course do I need to take?
A1. If this is your first time or your commission expired, you will need to take the 6 hour course. If you are already a notary and your commission has not expired, you can take the 3 hour course.
Q2. What is a livescan?
A2. Secretary of State requires that every notary submits livescan. Livescan fingerprinting refers to both the technique and the technology used by law enforcement agencies and private facilities to capture fingerprints and palm prints electronically, without the need for the more traditional method of ink and paper. ATG is approved by DOJ and FBI to administer livescan and we can do it for you right before the State exam.
Q3. When do I become a notary?
A3. First, you take the class. Second, you take the State exam. Within 15 days you will receive the results. Within 30 days, you will receive the commission package from Secretary of State. Within 30 days from the package, you will need to purchase the supplies and file an oath and the bond with county recorder’s office. After that you are a notary. Do not start notarizing after you receive the supplies. You can not notarize until you take an oath and file your bond with Secretary of State.
Q4. How often do I need to take a class and State exam?
A4. The commission is valid for 4 years. The class and State exam has to be taken before the commission expires. We highly recommend starting the process 3 years and 9 months. Don’t wait until the last month because if you don’t pass the exam before it expires, your commission will be terminated and you will have to reapply.
